From Uganda's foundational genetics to South Africa's next generation of Ankole.
I wanted to understand what lay behind the animal — the genetics, the bloodlines and the decisions that determine what survives into the next generation.
It started with the obvious.
My fascination with Ankole started with the obvious: the extraordinary horns, the colours, the presence of an animal that seems to carry Africa's history in its DNA. But over time, the attraction became something deeper. I wanted to understand what lay behind the animal — the genetics, the bloodlines and the decisions that determine what survives into the next generation.
That journey took us back to Uganda and to the foundational genetics from which South Africa's Ankole population was built. The first South African Ankole genetics arrived through embryos in the early 2000s, after a nucleus herd had been sourced from Uganda for embryo work. We began tracing those original animals and discovered that the story was more complicated than we imagined.
A genetic architecture, not a collection.
There were 38 foundational cows. Only 25 successfully produced offspring. And even those did not contribute equally. A relatively small number became disproportionately important in shaping the genetics that followed. Only 4 bulls were used. That always narrowed the genetic options.
Going right back to the beginnings changed the way I looked at cattle.
A herd is not simply a collection of beautiful animals. It is a genetic architecture. Every animal carries a history, every mating changes the possibilities available to the next generation, and some genetics are simply too valuable to lose.
Less about accumulating cattle. More about understanding them.
We trace pedigrees, study bloodlines, consider fertility and structure, examine progeny and think carefully about which combinations can strengthen the herd without unnecessarily narrowing its genetic options. We track the details and measure and evaluate every step of every process.

Another extraordinary opportunity.
New Ugandan genetics have recently entered South Africa through Kenya, introducing bloodlines that are unrelated to the established South African Ankole population.
The process took years of sourcing, disease testing, embryo work, quarantine and enormous commitment from the breeders and veterinary teams involved. Credit to the ‘crazy ones’ who made this possible. The first embryos were transferred in South Africa in December 2023. This time many more donor cows and bulls were used. We expect around 200 to 250 new genetics bulls and a similar number of cows to be added to the national herd.

We paid an appropriate premium to secure two of the first new bulls born in August 2024.
We are soon expecting our first calves from matching our new genetic bulls, NextGen and Novus, combined with Kyasha, Velvet, Cortado and our other proven top cows. Then we will observe their development, measure and track and evaluate their progress, and in 2 or 3 years time, we will be able to tell if any of those combinations lived up to our expectations.
The benefits of new bloodlines are obvious. They bring genetic diversity and new possibilities into a population whose original foundation was necessarily limited.
In one sense, we are back in 2006.
But there is a wonderful irony in what happens next.
We have new genetics. We have new bloodlines. We have exciting young animals. We can look at their horns, structure, colour and pedigree and speculate about their potential.
But we do not yet know which ones will matter most.
The same process starts again.
No one knew in 2006 which of the original animals would become the great genetic contributors. We only know that now because almost two decades of breeding, observation and record keeping have revealed the answer.
The next great Fire Sky bloodline may already be walking around the paddock. But it will take time, careful breeding and intense study to discover which animals merely look exceptional and which will actually leave a lasting genetic footprint.
That is what makes this so fascinating. We are not simply buying new genetics. We are participating in the next chapter of the genetic history of Ankole in South Africa.
And that creates a responsibility.
We see ourselves not simply as owners, but as temporary custodians of a remarkable African genetic heritage.
The genetics existed before us. We get to make decisions about them for a while. Then we hand them on.
Trace. Select. Combine. Prove. Preserve.
- Trace where the genetics came from.
- Select deliberately, not simply aesthetically.
- Combine bloodlines intelligently.
- Prove our decisions through fertility, structure and progeny.
- And preserve what may be valuable long after we are gone.
It is a story about stewardship.
The journey from Uganda's foundational genetics to South Africa's next generation of Ankole is therefore not simply a story about cattle. It is a story about stewardship.
It is about understanding the genetic architecture behind the animal, learning from what came before, recognising what has been lost, protecting what remains and having the patience to discover what might become important next.
We may never know which young animal will become the next Maximus or Kyasha. That is precisely the point.
Great cattle may capture the eye.
Great genetics shape generations.
